 "Come on, don't be a pussy. It's just some BD's and a wicked high."

"It's just not my thing, guys."

"Told you he'd chicken out."

Ren sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. He never understood why they liked those XBD's so much. And drugs just made him feel not in control of his senses. Still, he knew the group would give him hell unless he went along.

"Fine. But I can't be out too late. My parents want me to attend a party later."

"Like it'd be any fun."

"Not meant to be fun. Meant to further my eventual career. You know what it's like."

"Yeah, yeah. Just don't miss out on the real shit. Come on."

The hotel they led him to was still in Downtown City Center, but it still managed to seem shady...One of the group's bodyguard stayed outside the room to keep watch. Inside Ren could see they'd prepared the place ahead of time. There were already drugs, XBD packets and copious alcohol bottles on the table.

"Got your wreath?"

"These better be clean. Last time you dragged me along for this, the BD bugged my wreath out."

"What, you have trouble replacing it or something?"

"It's just a pain to have to reconfigure it just cause you didn't check your chips."

His friends just laughed and headed over to drop into their seats, reaching for what he learned last time was called S-keef, and each taking a whiff.

"Chill out Choom! Come on, take a whiff."

Ren sighed and walked over to grab the inhaler, taking the last free seat and bracing himself before taking a dose. He felt the headrush immediately. These things used to be used for soldiers to ignore pain and boost their adrenaline. But using it just for a high felt wrong. Still, peer pressure was a powerful thing.

He tossed the S-keef onto the table before picking up one of the BD packages. The others were already putting on their wreaths.

"So what'd you get this time?"

"Cyberpsycho attack from last week. You saw the news, yeah?"

Ren nearly dropped the chip in shock.

"You're serious? Why would you want to live in the head of a Psycho?"

"You gotta ask? All the thrill, and none of the repercussions! Chill out and just give it a try."

Already the others had plugged in and were sitting back and diving into that violent fantasy. Ren looked back at the chip, the drugs and then back to his 'friends'....Before sighing and putting the chip back on the table. They were already deep into the BD. They wouldn't notice him leave. Shouldn't have let them pressure him this far anyway...

Ren left the room, giving the bodyguard outside an excuse that his parents messaged him and he was needed back home, before shouldering his bag and starting the walk. He could call a car, but if his parents found out where he was and what he was doing, he'd be in even more trouble. Better to just walk. Besides, it's not like he was in some seedy district. Downtown wasn't as safe as City Center, but even at this hour Ren could be fairly sure he would be safe. Just stick to the streets and be ready with a self defense quickhack if anyone came out of an alleyway.

At least. That's what he thought. The sound of a woman struggling however, had him coming to a stop.

"Just get in the car!"

"Stop it!"

Ren hesitated. He'd always been told not to get involved with anything happening on the streets. It wasn't his business. Just send a complaint notice and go. Trauma Team would take care of it. But...

"No..!"

"Don't give me that shit..."

The man sounded drunk. Not unusual. And from what Ren could see down the narrow road, was clearly overpowering the struggling woman. Maybe she didn't have Trauma Team coverage...They'd be here by now if she did...

"Ow! P-Please, stop...!"

Ren was running down the road before he even realised what he was doing. He couldn't just ignore this.

"Hey, knock it off!"

The man glanced around to glare at Ren, but he couldn't quite make his face out. The lights of the car were hitting him right in the face, and he'd just had his Kiroshi's updated earlier. He was still adjusting...

"What're you looking at? Het outta my face! This ain't a show. Get lost, kid."

"Leave her alone, or I'll call the police."

The man just laughed, and Ren felt a chill creep up his spine.

"Go ahead. The police are my bitches. They're not gonna take you seriously."

....If what he was saying was true, then this man was a powerful corporate. But he could also just be a drunk talking out of his ass. The confidence in how he said it though...

Already he'd turned back to the woman, grabbing her arm.

"See? This is all because you're so damn slow! Get in the car!"

"That hurts..!"

Again, Ren moved without thinking, reaching forward to grab the man's shoulder in an attempt to pull him away from her--But the man whipped around to shrug him off and Ren took a step back...only to watch him stumble over his own feet and fall over. Whatever he'd been drinking must have been pretty potent..

"Ah..!"

Ren looked at the woman, surprised by the fear still on her face...before looking back as the man got back to his feet, his hand covering a wound on his face.

"Damn brat... I'll sue!"

...The woman finally seemed to find some courage, stepping forward.

"If you keep this up...Then I'll report about the money! Is that fine with you!?"

Oh, perhaps she had some power instead...But Ren felt that chill again as the man scoffed.

"All I have to say is that you did it on your own, and it's over."

"But...I just did as I was told..."

"Who do you think I am?"

"No..."

....Fuck.

Suddenly the sound of an AV pierced the air. Ren looked up, seeing a Trauma Team vehicle moving into position, and felt his blood run cold. Because the guy was injured?....Platinum. He had Platinum coverage. Which meant...

"Hey. make this statement to Trauma Team. 'This kid suddenly attacked me.' Got it? If you even try to say anything else, you know what'll happen to you, right?"

Ren looked at the woman only to see the despair on her face confirm that...she was going to go along with this.

"This is bullshit!"

"Shut up. You're done for. You're gonna learn what happens when you cross me..."

"Sir! Are you alright?!"

Trauma had landed and the group was rushing over, weapons ready. The man turned, hands in his pockets, the picture of confidence and control, before glancing back at the woman.

"So, what happened? Explain it to them."

Ren looked at her, and she looked away from him before speaking...

"That young man suddenly attacked him...He shoved this gentleman to the ground...And this man...got injured."

"...It's as she says. Also...make sure you deal with this so my name isn't mentioned at all. You understand what that means, correct?"

'What? Hey!"

"Enough. You're coming with me. Sir, please allow the team to see to your injuries."

"B-but--"

Ren didn't even get a chance to defend himself. The leader of the team had come over and cuffed him while the others looked after the Corpo.

"Shut your mouth. I'm taking you to the nearest NCPD office. They'll deal with you."

"I didn't do anything!"

His words fell on deaf ears. The team captain grabbed him by the arm and dragged him away. It wasn't until they were several streets away, that he sighed.

"Listen kid. Whatever you say, it isn't going to help you now. I get that you might not be used to that. I scanned you. I know you're a member, which means you're used to having power. But it's nothing compared to that man."

Ren felt that chill run through him again.

"...Who is he?"

"Can't tell you that. Just...let me take you to the cops. They'll notify your parents. Maybe you can get them to cut a deal for you. That's the best you can hope for at this point."

Ren's shoulders slumped. He was screwed. He should have just stayed with his friends. He'd have nightmares for months from the XBD, but then at least he wouldn't have gotten involved.

But that woman would have had no one to help her....

....Dammit.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hours later, Ren woke in the cell he'd been placed in. There was an officer knocking on the cell door.
"Hey. You're out of here."
"Huh?"
The door opened and he fumbled to catch his bag that the officer threw to him.
"Are my parents here?"
The officer gave him a pitying look, which confused him....Until the notification popped up on his retinal screen.
-Notification of Expulsion from Arasaka Acadamy.-
-Notification of Trauma Team plan cancellation-
-Notification of Disinheritance-
.....No. No way.
"Wait...C-call my parents. Please!"
"They notified us earlier. They had to make a deal for you. The charges are dropped, but. Well. You're done. Keeps your crime from sullying their name."
"But I didn't do it!"
The officer walked in and sat next to Ren.
"Doesn't matter. Listen, a Corpo kid like you should know better than most not to piss off those above you. This is the hand you've been dealt now. Gotta play it."
Ren dropped his head into his hands. They cut him off. His own parents....They didn't care to listen to his side....Just that their name wasn't dragged into this mess...
The officer placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Listen. The Security Specialist filled me in. You're not a bad kid. Just got in a bad spot. I did pass on that information to your parents, but, looks like they're desperate to save face with whoever you got mixed up with. They sold all your stuff, but they're letting you keep the funds from it so you can start up somewhere else. That's a better go of it than most people get."
He handed a CredChip over to Ren, who took it numbly. His whole world now boiled down to Eurodollars on a CredChip. He had no family, no home, no school. He was sure his friends would turn him away as well....What could he do now...
Once again, the officer seemed to read his mind.
"I know someone who's looking for a part timer actually. Guy in Watson. Owns a cafe. He wants more time to spend with his daughter, so if you can learn how to work in the shop, he might help you out."
"...Why are you helping me?"
"Cause, not many in this city care enough to step in like you did. Even some of us on the force grow too numb to all this shit. We get tied down by red tape and orders from superiors to drop cases connected to those with power. But, you still wanted to help someone. Figured I might as well pay that forward with some advice. Need me to walk you to the metro?"
Ren considered for a moment....before sighing and nodding.
"Yeah....Thanks."
 Ren's grandfather was a decent king. Unfortunately his son and daughter in law were not good people. When the king passed and his son took over, the kingdom underwent change. He wanted to consolidate power. They were already a powerful country, but under the previous king's leadership, lived in peace with other nations. The new king wasn't content with treaties, and wanted to conquer.
Notes: Need to come up with names for the Grandfather and asshole parents.
Ren was more like his grandfather, but being young and under his parents watchful eyes, has no choice but to undergo the new training and studies benefitting a Soldier. A commander of their army.
But even so. He does what little he can to undermine them. Making sure their own people at least don't suffer under their rule. Using mercy when able to. Slipping information to a resistance...Little things.
Notes: Level of military training and royal responsibilities. Was nine years old when his parents cut him off from outside influence to start his education as future commander.
Resistance. Those who were loyal to the previous King and want to restore peace to the kingdom. Working heavily in secret for now, as the current King and Queen are ruthless in regards to those who question their rule.
 Once upon a time, Mankind and Vampires lived in delicate balance. Vampires would puppet Mankind from the shadows. Giving them wealth and power, letting them believe themselves independent, all the while Vampires pulled the strings and fed upon them as Mankind grew.
But eventually one came forward to upset the balance. A powerful Vampire named Dracula, who sought to conquer Vampire and Human alike. He gained unbelievable power in his quest to dominate all who stood before him. Those who refused to join him, would either be broken to serve, or outright destroyed. Many Vampires pushed back, not wanting to serve another, and their battles devastated the land and people.
Mankind, desperate, prayed for help. And the Light answered.
With the power of holy radiance, Mankind was able to fight back. Not just managing to seemingly destroy Dracula himself, but also push back all Vampires. They were forced to retreat, or be wiped out entirely.
And so it was for centuries. Mankind flourished, while Vampires slept in hiding. Biding their time and regaining their strength. But it wasn't just those left over from the battles who were recovering.
Dracula, forced into the Shadow Realm itself to recover his power, was readying himself for his return.
Rumors started spreading, as creatures of the night began to show themselves once more. That Vampires were not gone for good. And the creatures that fought alongside them were greater in strength than ever before. Even the warriors of Light struggled to hold them back. Humanity was being pushed back once more.
And so it was, that the Vampires who'd gone into hiding, were called to wake. Some among them, chosen to train and gain strength, to take the fight to Dracula. To restore the Balance once more. Given the knowledge on how to defeat Dracula for good. For as long as he still held his power, he could regenerate inside the Shadow Realm. But take that power from him....and he would not survive.
The only way to truly defeat him, was to become him. And only one who didn't want that power, could be trusted with it.
Which is how, during the second Blood War, Ren came to become the new Dracula. No longer a name, but a Title. And he called all of Dracula's forces back to the Territory of Mortium. Sent the creatures Dracula had summoned back into the Shadows, and decreed that Vampires would no longer attack Mankind without reason. So long as they remained peaceful, he would protect them from the Church of Luminance. Those who chose to continue to hunt innocents, would be cast out of Mortium and left to fend for themselves.
And thus a new, fragile balance was created.
But no such balance will last forever. For those with power, almost always seek to use it. And Mankind had gained great power in their search for the ability to destroy Dracula. And now they sought to wipe Vampires out for good, guilty or innocent.
The new Dracula, would have to defend his people, and try to do so without becoming the Monster he previously defeated.
Ren: Corpo born, but disowned by his parents after he stepped in to stop someone assaulting a woman, that someone being a powerful Corpo who pulled strings to get him arrested. The closest thing to supporting him his parents did after that was let him keep the money that came from them selling most of his things so he could get a place somewhere else. He had to drop out of school, move to Watson and get a job to support himself there. He was lucky to find Sojiro who took him in. He lives over Sojiro's cafe. Takes jobs where he can find them, which has lead him to the Edgerunner lifestyle, as well as how he met most of his friends who have become his new family.
Cyberware: Kiroshi optics from his life before he was disowned. He also uses a cyberdeck for basic level hacking.
Ryuji: Streetkid through and through. Always looking out for his mother and trying to make things easier for her. Was attacked in his teen years which damaged his knee. Over the years his mother managed to scrape together enough eddies to get him a low grade Cybernetic replacement, and now Ryuji fights in illegal fight clubs to try to pay her back and give her a better life.
Met Ren not long after he had to move out to Watson and they clicked immediately, despite Ren's Corpo roots. He taught Ren how to survive on the streets, and Ren helps pull him back when his Fight or Fight instincts start to get him into trouble. He often helps Ren out on his jobs, and Ren gives him a cut of the pay so he doesn't have to fight in the rings as often.
Cyberware: Basic knee cyber replacement. Low quality as his mother couldn't afford better at the time. Basic level gorilla arms to help in his street fights.
Morgana: Mysterious AI Ren came across on a job and rescued. Insists that he's human and just needs to find his body. In the meantime his chip was installed into a cat droid and he has to act like a VI to prevent raising suspicions. Has many gaps in his memories, but still knows a lot more than he even realizes. He's been able to teach Ren a lot in order for Ren to gain the skills needed to help him out.
Cyberware: Droid body has a cyberdeck built in so he can execute hacks. He also has medical equipment installed as the body was a helper droid before being repurposed.
Ann: Always got attention for her looks. She naturally had the body that many in Night City had to go to multiple ripperdocs for. And she hated the attention it got her. All she wanted to do was just hang out with her best and only friend. The only one who really saw her for who she was instead of what she looked like. Unfortunately, they still got the worst type of attention. A man by the name of Kamoshida. He tried to pressure the both of them for sex. Tried to use them against each other, cause they were each others greatest weakness. They'd do anything to protect each other.
Luckily, they lived in Mox territory. A member found out what they were going through and immediately brought them under their wing. Kamoshida mysteriously left town not long after. As a result both Ann and Shiho look up to the Mox and eventually joined the gang, doing minor jobs at first and working their way up as they grew.
Cyberware: Thermal monowire provided by The Mox. Basic cyberdeck but she only really uses the overheat for now. She's not too hack savvy yet.
Yusuke: Raised by the famous Traditional artist, Madarame, who had taught Yusuke's mother before she died. Yusuke inherited his mother's talent and since he was also being taught by Madarame, his skill grew considerably. Unfortunately, Madarame wasn't the master painter he made himself out to be. Not in practice anyway. Instead, he stole the paintings of his students, and crushed anyone who spoke out against him. Yusuke, having been raised by Madarme, was unfortunately very dedicated to him, and would not defy him, instead willingly giving over his work to his master.
Lucky for him, he took an interest in Ann and wanted to paint her. This brought him into contact with the group who would eventually snap him out of his Stockholm syndrome and help him gain his freedom.
He has to work with different materials now that he's escaped the hypercorrupt traditional art world, but his skill and desire to pursue a purer form of art is more than enough to make it work. Night City is finding incredible murals appearing on buildings in various districts that are starting to inspire those who see them.
Cyberware: As the most traditionally raised of the group, he doesn't have much installed beyond his optics, but he is saving to have some more installed.
Makoto: Grew up in Heywood with her sister and father. Her father managed to keep them in the middle class of Heywood and worked as a police officer. Probably the only NCPD that the Valentinos didn't have a problem with. He was well aware of the limitations imposed upon cops despite their desire to do better, and was equally aware of how The Valentinos would pick up the slack at times. Due to this attitude, Makoto grew up respecting both lawful and less lawful methods of justice. Especially after learning how the law failed her father when he was killed during an investigation into a new gang. Sae managed to keep them in place in their middle class life by throwing herself further into work, and Makoto saw how that started to change her. How the corporate world would try to corrupt any sense of justice, even one as strong as her sister's.
So she chose a different path. The structure of the police force had changed to the point that no cop could rise to the rank of being able to reform the force. If there was to be justice, it would have to come from less official sources. The police were tied down by red tape and bribes.
Which meant that when her friend Eiko became involved with a gang member trying to swingle her into their con, Makoto could only rely on herself to try to save her. Only problem was the gang in question was a lot more dangerous than originally anticipated. It might not be a job she can do alone.
Cyberware: Hidden gorilla arms. Her father wanted her to be able to defend herself and taught her to fight as well as providing cyberarms that wouldn't be immediately apparent. She also has a Cyberdeck and is well studied in self defence hacks such as Reboot Optics, Cyberware Malfunction and Weapon Glitch.
Futaba: Raised and taught by her mother, Wakaba, one of the greatest Netrunners in Night City. Possibly the world. A reputation that got her the worst kind of attention. Corpo attention. Careful as she was, she knew that they were closing in. She confided in her friend, Sojiro Sakura and asked that he look after her daughter should anything happen to her.
Unfortunately, she was right. Official records state that she was a victim of the usual Night City violance, though a body was never recovered, and Futaba knew that her mother was too good to be taken surprise by ordinary gangs. Only the Corporations could have done it.
While Futaba now lives with Sojiro, laying low in Watson, she secretly scours the Net. However much of it she can access. She's used her own prodigal Netrunning skills to earn money and online reputation as The Oracle. She can find any information. Any person. Any secret. Except, what happened to her mother.
Cyberware: She's used the money she earned via Netrunning to have multiple high end Cyberware installed, all to increase her Netrunning ability. She has the best quality Cyberdeck. Multple Frontal Cortex implants to increase her hacking ability, RAM recovery and cooldowns, as well as the best optics money can buy. She still wears her glasses as a second screen for additional information though.
Haru: Only child of the President of Okumura Foods, the top food producing corporation around. Even with all the power of a top corporation at his fingertips, he still yearns for more, which is why he's constantly in talks with the top corporation, Arasaka, to try and gain more influence. To that end, he even uses his daughter. She had a strict upbringing and education. Raised to be completely obedient. To be the perfect daughter and, eventually, fulfill her role and be married off to an Arasaka corpo to be the perfect Wife.
And she hates it. All Haru wants is freedom. She wants to be free of her controlling environment. Free of her fiance. She wants her father to see her as a person, and not just a tool. She wants to live her own life, and is reaching the point that she'd sacrifice almost anything to get it.
Cyberware: Haru has what's expected of the rich and powerful, but controlled. She has high end Kiroshi optics, security systems to prevent targeting from picksockets, leftover augmentations from her time as a dancer, a tracking chip so her father knows where she is at all times, and....The Doll Chip. Her father insisted it was a mercy for her since she didn't care for her fiancé, it would help her endure her time with him. It also allowed her to be used to send and receive information between her father and other corporate agents without her being able to remember any of it. A tool, through and through.
For now.
Akechi: Illegitimate son of a high ranking Arasaka corpo. Shido abandoned Goro's mother as soon as he learned she was pregnant, so she had to raise Goro alone, doing whatever she could to keep a roof over their heads. Goro loved his mother and wanted to do all he could to make things easier for her, devoting himself to his studies. Unfortunately the stress and depression of all that had happened led to her taking her own life. Akechi despised his father for their misfortune and planned to try to destroy his life.
Luckily though, he came into contact with Makoto and Haru, and they helped to pull him out of the Darkness. Now his focus was to live his life the best he could for his mother, and looking out for the friends who had pulled him back from the edge.
He still harbours an intense hatred for Arasaka and his father in particular, and will do whatever he can to undermine the company.
Cyberware: Cyberdeck for hacking. He tends to take enemies out with quickhacks before he can be noticed. When a fight does occur though, he has Mantis Blades installed.
He's been doing well in his work. Efforts finally starting to pay off. It's just a shame that they also get him attention.
He's a secret agent. Fights B.O.W's for fucks sake. You wouldn't think that in the time between missions he'd have to mingle with the elites so much.
Paperwork and meetings he can deal with. But why on earth is he expected to show up to a party? Not just any party. A Black Tie event.
He's expected to show. He's expected to mingle. For fucks sake they even told him to try to dance.
"People want to see the young man who's been making such strides take part in this. It's just one night. You've gone through worse things than a party."
Honestly he'd rather be fighting zombies...
Leon sighs as he steps out of the tailors shop he'd just ordered his new suit at. Last one got bullet holes in it. Not to mention this party apparently needs a slightly higher standard than his old suit.
He's heading back to his car when the scent of coffee wafts past his face and he pauses, glancing at the cafe across the road.
Couldn't hurt. Might even help clear his head a little.
Claire had been settled at a table in the cafe for a while, laptop open as she writes up some reports for TerraSave. Latest charity works and such. She'd normally write them up at home but she'd been cooped up for a while and needed the change of scenery. Besides, the coffee is good here.
Speaking of, she might be needing a refill. It's just as she drains her mug and stands up to order a second that she sees that familiar frame up at the counter. For a second she thinks she's imagining it. Just some similar looking stranger. But she's close enough that she hears the name given for his order.
"Leon?"
The man turns to look at her and lo and behold.
"Claire?"
Immediately the fatigue from work just fades away. Seeing him again always makes her feel lighter, knowing that whatever horrors his work takes him to haven't taken him out and he's still fighting strong. Those long periods of time between contact always cause worry to spring up in the back of her mind.
"Long time no see, Rookie."
She sees his lips quirk up into a small smile at the nickname. The reason she'll never stop using it. God knows he needs to smile more.
Leon winds up sitting at the booth with Claire instead of getting the coffee for takeaway like he'd originally planned. It's been a while since they caught up and he can't help the pull he always feels around her. The need to spend as much time as he can in these few and far between moments they actually get to see each other. In the far back of his mind, some part of him knows what that pull is, but he always refuses to give it too much thought. She's just a dear friend. One of the few that really understands.
"So, what brought Mr. Double O'seven to this place? I haven't seen you in the area before."
He rolls his eyes a little at the (yet another) nickname, before inclining his head towards the tailor shop that can be seen through the window.
"Needed a new suit."
"Don't you usually get your outfits made tactical?"
He chuckles. He wished this event allowed tactical.
"Not this time unfortunately. Mandatory party. No clue why they need me for this kind of thing but, there you go."
Claire gave an understanding wince.
"Yeah, those can suck."
He raised an eyebrow.
"TerraSave sends you to those kinds of events much?"
Claire shrugged, taking another sip of her coffee before answering.
"Not often, but it can be useful for making connections. We're pretty good on funding and support, but meeting new people to help the cause never hurts."
An idea suddenly struck Leon. An incredibly out of the blue stupid and downright dangerous idea. And before he knew it, he was already voicing it out.
"You know...I do get to bring along a plus one."
Claire's eyebrows shot up at that.
"...You're kidding."
In all the years she'd known him, he'd been chronically dense. There was no way he was just suddenly seeing the light now. So she pushed down the anticipation that had flared at his words, and just waited for him to continue.
Leon leaned forward a little. Now that he'd let the sudden idea slip, he decided to follow through with it.
"No, seriously. It's a big upperclass party. I'm sure there'll be plenty of people you could talk to about your work. And having you to hide behind might make the evening more bareable for me."
Claire snorted.
"Ah. Hiding behind your date. They teach you that in secret agent school?"
She immediately hated herself for using the word 'date', but couldn't take it back now. Besides, she knew he'd just see it as teasing, even if the knowledge that that's all it'll be did sting a little.
Leon just smirked a little, not responding to the tease and instead just pressed on.
"Well? What do you think?"
She bit the inside of her cheek a little. She did have the time for it, and more support is always welcomed. God knows there are so many people out there they still need to help. The more support they can secure for them the better.
The only problem was showing up with Leon as his plus one. Playful banter is fine. Fighting alongside him? Easy. Actually going to a formal party together as his plus one? That brought up feelings long since buried.
But she's Claire Redfield. Never let it be said that she backed down from anything. Especially something that could potentially do some good.
"I guess I could. Though really? I'm sure you've got a long list of girls who'd actually love to go to one of these things."
Again, Leon rolled his eyes. It's not the first time Claire's teased him about his admirers. Got more girls than Bond she once teased him. He can't deny he's been around a bit, but they never last. And he definitely wouldn't want to call them up for this party.
"I can go solo if I want. I just thought you might be able to make some connections there. If I could avoid going, I would. But since I can't, someone might as well get something out of it."
Claire leaned back in her seat, rolling her eyes.
"Ah, the pressures of the high life. Geez, fine. I'll protect you from the scary party goers. When is it?"
Leon grinned and filled her in on the date and time, and Claire double checked her schedule before confirming she could make it.
"Thanks, Claire. Joking and stuff aside, with you there, I might actually enjoy myself."
She felt warmth rise in her chest at that, but knew, from experience, that he didn't mean it the way she wished he did. So she pushed the feeling down and just smiled back.
"Yeah, besides, it'll be nice to hang out some more too."
Leon nodded, before draining the last of his coffee and standing up.
"I should get going. Want me to pick you up for the party?"
"Sure, thanks."
"No problem."
He moved to leave, before pausing and turning back to her.
"Oh, and it's Black Tie. It's, not a problem, right?"
Oh shit. She didn't have anything fancier than a cocktail dress, and that one definitely wasn't Black Tie standards. She was going to have to go shopping.
"Uh, no. It's fine."
He nodded with a small smile and left, and Claire waited until he was well out of sight from the window before leaning back in her seat with a groan.
"Great.."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Drastic times called for drastic measures. She needed a new dress. And perhaps someone to help her pick one out. She's always been more of a jeans and biker jacket kind of girl. She needed the opinion of someone a little girlier.

And she loved every moment she got to spend with Sherry as well.

"What's this party for again?"

The young woman was sorting through dress racks with Claire in some fancy store she just knew was going to put a nasty dent in her credit card.

"Ah, just some fancy thing where a bunch of snobs are getting together. But it's got a dress code I am ill equiped for."

"Is TerraSave sending you on Networking duty again?"

Claire still hadn't told her that Leon invited her. She knew that Sherry still wished they'd get together. Hadn't let go of that idea since the day they escaped Raccon City together.

"I'm not on orders, no. Just, figured I'd see if there's anyone who might be able to help out there."

"It's a lot of trouble to go to if you don't have to though, isn't it? You could always make connections at an event that isn't Black Tie."

Sherry was digging. Being an agent was giving her some dangerous habits. Then again, she'd always been a curious girl determined to find out as much as she can about the people she cared about.

Claire just shrugged, pulling a deep red dress off the clothes rack to assess, before letting out a small huff and immediately discarding it. That shade was a definite nope.

"Bigger event has people with more connections. It'll be worth the trouble."

"Are you going with anyone?"

Claire couldn't help the grin. There it was.

"I'm not attending it to date, Sherry. It's just business."

The young woman smiled back, undeterred.

"So you could invite someone for business purposes. You know, certain agents could introduce you to a few connections?"

"You offering to be my date now?"

Sherry giggled at that, well used to Claire's teasing by now. She'd even picked up some of it over the years herself.

"Not me, no. But maybe Leon..?"

"You think he'd enjoy going to one of these things any more than I do?"

"I'm just saying it's an option. He does have to attend these things now and then, doesn't he?"

Of course Sherry would know. She and Leon might not meet up as often as she and Claire do, but she does know some of the requirements Agents have. Even the boring party requirements.

Claire was silent a moment too long as she considered how to avoid the subject. Sherry had been watching her closely, and a knowing smile was forming on her face.

"Or maybe, he's already going?"

Damn.

"What gives you that idea?"

"The fact that you're blushing."

Claire started at that, reaching up to feel her cheeks before she could stop herself, and Sherry laughed.

Double damn. The kid bluffed her.

"Sherry Birkin, you are learning some dirty tricks."

"I learned those from you."

Claire couldn't help the laugh now. Oh well. Cat's out of the bag.

"Okay...Yes. Leon invited me. Just to help with networking, okay? And as a shield against the other party guests."

Sherry's smile just grew even brighter at that.

"He asked you to be his date?"

"I belive the words he used was Plus One."

"That's still a date."

"It's not a date, Sherry."

The young woman just turned back to the dresses with renewed purpose. She wasn't just helping Claire find a dress for a party now. She was helping Claire find a dress to go to a party with Leon.

That made all the difference.

Claire noticed the increased enthusiasm and couldn't help but laugh.

"Oh, now you're taking this seriously?"

"Aren't you?"

"Seriously, for work. I just need something to fit the dress code."

"So, you don't think it'd be fun to see what he thinks of your dress?"

This time Claire did feel a slight heat rising in her cheeks. She couldn't deny she wanted to look nice, at the very least to keep from embarassing the person who invited her. But she was long past expecting him to take notice of her in that way. Having the idea spoken aloud though....

It was tempting.

She sighed in defeat and went back to dress hunting with Sherry. Fine. She'd put more effort into it. She wouldn't expect anything to come of it. But, maybe Sherry was right and it could be fun.

By the time they found one, she already regretted it.

Not that she didn't look good in it. I mean, Damn, she looked good. Sherry definitely had a gift for finding nice clothes. And it wouldn't break her credit card either.

But the fact that they put the extra effort in to find it for impressing Leon, was starting to give her doubts. She had long ago put those thoughts to bed. She didn't want to go and get her hopes up for a reaction. A response beyond their usual teasing. She knew him. He was far too dense. And she didn't want to go through those motions again of hoping he might take notice.

Not that she voiced any of these thoughts to Sherry. She was not going to give her any confirmation that her hunch about them had been right, at least in Claire's case. And with that being her only excuse against it, she really had no choice but to go with the spectacular dress Sherry had picked out.

Soon enough it was wrapped up and paid for and the girls had left the store to settle at a cafe to chat.

"So when is this party?"

"You're awfully excited about a party you're not even attending."

"You know why. And I want to hear all about it afterwards, okay?"

"I'll be sure to give you all the exciting details of my networking attempts."

Sherry rolled her eyes. Claire hadn't given any more mention to the fact that she and Leon were going together since she first admitted it to her. Just deflection with her usual snarky methods.

"You really don't want to give it a chance at all?"

Claire sighed at that. Guess she couldn't keep hiding from this conversation forever.

"I'm just...Resigned, I guess."

Sherry just tilted her head, listening, and Claire continued.

"Leon is, dense. Like, chronically dense. He doesn't take notice of these things. At least not with me. I'm not going to expect anything more from him, and I've accepted that. A long time ago."

The younger woman looked down into her coffee, contemplating Claire's admission. On one hand, she'd finally admitted what Sherry had always suspected. There were some feeligns for Leon there.

But she'd also got tired of waiting.

....Sherry looked up again.

"So, you've tried to show that interest with him before?"

Claire hesitated. Sure, she and Leon banter a lot. Tease each other. But that's just something they've done from day one. They just fall into that routine every time.

But actually being more direct about it...She has to admit, she hasn't tried it. Mostly out of those same reservations. He's the oblivious boy scout, who simultaneously has a list of exes long enough to rival his other body count.

It was the fact that he never took that same notice in her that made her hesitate.

Sherry didn't push her for an answer. Just let her think about it as they sat in silence with their drinks. She'd done her meddling.

It was several minutes later when Claire broke the silence.

"Since when have you been the expert in dating advice, kiddo?"

She just smiled. Seems like Claire was considering it at least.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Soon enough, the night of the party was upon them. Leon had set out a little early just in case of traffic and was now sitting in his car outside of Claire's apartment, wondering if he should go up early or not. He didn't want to put pressure on her when he originally set the time.
After a few moments wondering, he picked up his phone to send her a text.
'Traffic was better than expected. I'm outside. No need to rush, just letting you know.'
Simple. No pressure.
It still made Claire fumble her phone when she read the message.
Not that she was running late or anything. In fact she'd gotten ready early, mainly just to give herself something to do to push down the nerves she was feeling.
Dammit, Sherry. Had to go and put these thoughts back in her head... Now she was stumbling around like a teenager on prom night.
After taking a deep breath to calm herself, she responded.
'Come on up. I'm just grabbing my things.'
As soon as he read her reply, he was out of the car and heading up to her apartment.
In the days leading up to the party, he'd become increasingly aware of a little tingle of excitement in the back of his mind. The same place he pushed away that little voice that always tried to speak up when he saw Claire. The voice he ignored.
It was getting louder and louder as the party drew nearer, and he knew it was also responsible for that tingle of excitement he kept feeling.
It's nothing. We're just a couple of friends going out for a fun night. We rarely ever just hang out together.
Honestly he's mostly to blame for that. He keeps his distance due to his work. He's well aware of the effect it has on him. Every mission seems to drain more life from him. He's feeling more and more like the living dead he hunts.
Claire's still full of life. He doesn't want to ruin that for her by bringing too much of his world into contact with hers.
Then why did you invite her out?
The thought took him by surprise and he bristled.
To help her. This party will have a lot of important and powerful people there. She could use connections like that with her work. The work that helps those still living.
That's all this was.
He took a deep breath, pushing the thoughts from his mind as he finally arrived at her door and reached up to knock.
"-shit..Hang on!"
He couldn't help but chuckle. She's the one who invited him up. Did she not expect him to actually do so?
Maybe he still got there sooner than expected. He had noticed his pace was a little quicker than usual.
A moment passed, before he heard heeled footsteps, and she opened the door.
The teasing remark he'd prepared died in his mouth.
Holy shit...
The practical denim and biker jacket girl he was used to was no where to be found.
The woman standing before him looked like a model. Like royalty.
The floor length gown was that signature shade of red he'd come to know she favoured, and shimmered in the low light. The neckline was an off the shoulder v, leaving her neck and shoulders bare and drawing his eyes at least to the cleavage just showing. There was a slit in the left side of the skirt that reached halfway up her thigh and he had to tear his eyes away from the leg she flashed in her hurry to open the door.
"Sorry about that. Sherry just texted me and I was sending her a reply."
Claire offered an apologetic smile before stepping through the doorway and turning to close and lock the door behind her, showing off arguably the most dangerous aspect of her dress, which was the fact that it was almost entirely backless. It took more effort than he would ever admit in order to drag his gaze away from the curve of her spine and back up to her face as she double checked the contents of her clutch.
He cleared his throat, forcing himself to focus on her words.
"Sherry, huh? Giving you makeup tips?"
Claire chuckled, putting her keys back into her clutch before looking up at him.
"Guilty. What do you think? She give good advice?"
Teasing she could do. That was easy to fall back into. She wasn't oblivious, especially given the context of the text Sherry had actually sent her was to make sure to catch Leon's reaction when he saw her. She'd acted as casual as she could, but she'd been watching.
Leon has a good mask. But no one can read him like she can.
She had to fight to keep her composure at seeing his reaction, and made a mental note to thank Sherry again for helping her find this dress.
Leon swallowed, glancing her over once more. It's true. It wasn't just the dress that she'd done different. It might be the first time in his life he'd seen her without the ponytail. Her hair was pulled back into a bun that was equal parts elegant and almost messy. Some locks of hair had been left out to curl dangerously around her face, showing off the extent of Sherry's 'makeup advice.'
Claire didn't need much. Just enough to highlight her features. Specifically drawing attention to those sparkling blue eyes, and her lips...
"..Kid knows her stuff."
"I know, right? Seems like just yesterday she was still begging for that puppy. Now she's all grown up and advising me on fashion."
Leon chuckled at that.
"She's grown up fast, that's for sure."
The breeze picked up a little and he saw Claire suppress a shiver. Her dress might be gorgeous, but it didn't do much to keep out the cold.
He offered his arm to her, once again pushing that feeling down as far as he could.
"Come on. I'll put the heater on in the car."
Claire smiled, taking his arm.
"So long as it just keeps the breeze out I'll be fine."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Claire knew the party was going to be big. She knew that everyone there would be some big and important government or business official. She knew she would be dealing with elites and by this point she knew she was capable of dealing with them.

Even so, she couldn't help but feel a little nervous as they walked into the event.

"God, Leon. A little warning next time?"

"I told you it'd be a big event."

"Bit of an understatement don't you think?"

"Why do you think I didn't want to come?"

Claire suppressed the urge to snort at that. Yeah, and he invited her to shield him from the social aspects of the party. What a hero..

"Come on. I'll introduce you to some people."

Claire swallowed down her nerves and followed Leon's lead. He may hate these things, but it looked like he was used to them at this point. He introduced her to government officials. People he worked with. Business leaders. He set her up easily to segue into bringing up her work with TerraSave and after a while though she'd been initially nervous walking in, she was more than pleased with the progress she'd made. She'd managed to arrange a few potential meetings with her group and offers for support. Every bit went a lot way. It really was worth it coming along.

She'd almost forgotten the other reason she was here.

Which was honestly a mercy to Leon.

He'd put the mask back in place as soon as they'd left her apartment, and spent a good deal of the drive to the party mentally chastising himself for the way he knew he'd looked at her. Even now, well into the night he had trouble keeping his eyes off of her. Anytime they spoke he had to put considerable effort to keep his eyes on her face and not let them wander. He'd almost considered inviting her a mistake...if not for the fact that he could see how happy she was with every bit of support she managed to get from the people he introduced her to. He knew how much helping people meant to her. He chose to fight literally. She would fight the same way when needed, but so much of her energy went into healing, rather than fighting. The effort she put into helping the people who'd been affected by the horrors of biowarfare was nothing short of incredible.

Whatever his godforsaken hormones were trying to pull on him, he wouldn't let that take away from what he invited her for.

 World! Basic fantasy type setting. Dragon Age is a good comparison for it. Occasional steampunk here and there, or magic based technology or magic items and potions.

LOTS of different creatures and spirits and beasts and everything. There's so much in this world, but to begin with we won't need to dive into the monster manual XD

Races! There's a handful of "playable" races, which generally translates to, good enough to adventure, but not game breaking by design! I will try to get some diversity within the group, tho I have both Makoto and Akehci pegged as Assimar, but different types. Either are subject to change if you want though.

Classes! Again gonna use Dragon Age as the comparison cause we've both played it. Tho in Dragon Age you have three classes, in DnD you have a lot more. But they're pretty standard, it only starts getting confusing when you get into subclasses, but I will try to simplify that as well.
Subclasses! You know how in Dragon Age, if you're a Warrior, you can also become a Templar, or a Champion, or as a Rogue you can become an Assassin so on so forth?This is similar, but with a lot more options for making your ideal character. I will put explanations for the relevant ones with the character info so I'm not just explaining everything at once.

DUAL CLASSING! What if you started your life as a basic fighter, but then realized a few levels later that it's boring and want to shoot magic from your hands? You can do that! If you have the stats for it, you can learn a different class! But you don't transfer your level over. If you have 3 levels in fighter, you still have to start as a level 1 wizard, and when you level up, you decide which class to level up, you can't level both at once. I only mention the stats and levels to explain different skill levels for different characters. We won't be going into the numbers for an au.

Okay! Gonna start with Ren cause ngl he's the one I've brainstormed the most for.
Tiefling, basically DnD's half demon, but they can be born to humans who simply make a deal with a demon, or it could appear down the line generations later instead. Either fuck a demon or make a deal with one, and there's a chance that you'll get a Tiefling baby in your family some day. Given what we know about Ren's parents ingame, I'd guess a deal happened, and then when this rich influencial couple discovered their baby had a tail, they abandoned him, so he was raised in an orphanage/on the streets, leading him to become a Rogue-Thief to survive.

Rogue: You sneaky sneak and do the stealth attacks. Also you're very agile and can dodge good.

Thief subclass: Shiny shiny make it miney.
HOWEVER. Once the group starts to get together, He's going to dual class into Warlock, which is why I brought up the dual classing earlier. Probably a similar event to Ren Awakening to Arsene. Danger happened. He was deserpate for help. And...Something answered.

Warlock: A patron of some kind gives you access to MAGIC. In return you gotta do things for the Patron. Some patrons don't care much for their warlocks, others will meddle directly. I'm imagining Ren's to be sort of like a Velvet room type contract. Shit going down. Fix it.

Morgana! Because the Tabaxi (cat person) character I whipped up for him was creepy as hell, I'm making him Ren's familiar instead. Normally a Warlock would only have a Familiar with pact of the Chain, but I'm giving Ren a Feat (special ability characters can gain at certain points) called magic initiate. Basically he picked up just a few magic spells to help him in his thieving. Find Familiar was one. So Morgana is a Fey spirit that takes the form of a cat. While he's within 100 feet of Ren, they can communicate telepathically. Ren can also summon him when needed, or let him chill in an interdimensional space. Ren can also see and hear through Morgana's senses, but loses his own sight and hearing for the duration. Makes for good information gathering though. Since Morgana is a Fey Spirit, I'mma say he can have proper personality more than just Meow/uh

Ryuji! Half Orc. Gonna say his dad was the Orc parent given what we know of him, and he's now out of the picture. Why I think half orc fits Ryuji? Cause of how they feel emotion. They feel it so strongly. Rage makes them burn. Insults stings like acid. Sadness weakens them. But joys and pleasures and laughter are experienced just as strong as well. It felt very Ryuji-ish to me.

Barbarian: Basically a Beserker class in Dragon Age origins and 2. Their special ability is their Rage, which gives them and their allies a bunch of bonuses.

Path of the Storm Herald subclass: Hit things with LIGHTNING.

I'mma say he and Ren probably are friends already, living in the same city and trying to get by morally questionable means. If Ren's the sneaky sneaky thief, Ryuji's the muscle and intimidation.
I don't personally see Ryuji feeling the need to dual class, but we can talk over the possibility if you want!

Ann! Human, plain and simple. Except not simple cause she's a Sorceror. In the world of DnD, Wizards study for years to use magic, Warlocks make dubious pacts, Paladins and Clerics are given magic from their Gods, Bards go Doot Doot Magic Flute, and Sorcerors are just born with it. Maybe their ancestor fucked a dragon (Bards, you never know/uh) or they were born during a crazy magic storm or on the day of some kind of ecplipse, but the point is, their magic is just part of them.

Pyromancy subclass: THIS GIRL IS ON FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRE.

Yusuke! I was thinking of going half elf for him, but since we swapped Haru from Dwarf to half Elf to keep the Fey theme going, I'm thinking full Elf for Yusuke. Elves in Dnd are more like LOTR elves rather than Dragon Age elves. There's different types still, but we don't need to go into that here.

Warrior: He be basic bitching up in here.

Samurai subclass: Less basic. Get that accuracy and skill increase. I am the Storm that is ApprOOOOOAAAAAching.

Grabbing the Artisan background for him to get him painting. Just cause we're exploring doens't mean he can't make beauty on the side.

MAKOTO! Assimar, which is basically a half angel. Got that celesital blood pumping through her veins. She can punch you with celestial light and she might sprout glowing incorporeal wings for a minute so she can divebomb you with celestial light for added flair.

Paladin: Basically DnD's Templar. Holy warrior. God's chosen. Smite the naughty.

Oath of the Crown: Ideals of Civilization. A nation, sovereign, or deity of law and rulership. They serve and protect Society. Could potentially see them rebelling against a corrupt system that hurts the people in order to heal that society as well.

Futaba! Gnome Warlock! Tiny genius with dubious practices. What's more to say? Well a lot cause. Warlock.
As mentioned above, it's when a powerful entity gifts magic to those who enter a pact with it. There's a lot of powerful entities, but for Futaba we're going Eldritch magics, so Great Old One for her. Can be any Eldritch horror really. Madness and creepypastas abound.
Warlocks get to choose from different patrons, and then also different pacts. Not quite the same as a subclass. Futaba would be taking Pact of the Tome, and basically using this magic book in place of her laptop.

Haru! Half Elf for that Fey ancestry, and making her a Cleric. Slightly more healy than a Paladin, but still gets to smash things.

Cleric: Think Rapunzel. If it's an enemy, smash it with a heavy object, if it's an ally, heal or buff with holy magic.

Nature Domain subclass: Basically letting me play more to the plants and flowers side of her we like to use. Gets some fun nature magic as well to reference the Fey powers she's had in previous AUS.

Akechi: I'm thinking Assimar for him as well, but a fallen Assimar, which gets powers of darkness. They don't necessarily have to be evil, so we can still have him be the Hobo version too, but he'd likely be more neutral.
Also, thinking Paladin for him as well. However I do have his subclass picked, and I figured he'd go with Oath of Vengeance, which makes him a Darker Paladin in contrast to Makoto, so we still have some variance there.

I HAVE NOT FINISHED STRIKERS YET. SOPHIA AND ZENKICHI HEADCANONS TO COME.
